What is felting?
Felting is a centuries’ old process that was first done out of necessity to make fabric from sheep’s wool. Now we do it mostly for the pleasure of creating with wool. Dry felting is done with special needles that entangle, compress and shape the wool fibers. Some of our 2D landscapes are done in this way, or we may add details to other projects with a needle. Wet felting is a magical alchemy of wool, water, soap and friction. A design is created with wool and other fibers (silk, bamboo, etc). We then press air out and water in, opening up the scales on the wool fibers. The next steps are various levels of agitation to encourage the fibers to come together tightly, slowly shrinking like a wool sweater that goes through the wash cycle. This can take 2-4+ hours depending on the kind of wool, the size of the project, the complexity of the design, etc. Felting takes time and patience but the results are oh, so satisfying!
